So far, Jimmy Lang has had one whale of a racing season. After only six races, Lang has taken down five wins in the ASA Late Model South Series. The story has been the same week after week and the recent race at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Cecil, Georgia, was no exception. Lang started ninth in the field after qualifying second. Then, he rocketed to the front to score another impressive victory.
“It’s pretty awesome to win as many race as we have,” said Lang. “We are tied for the most wins in series history. It has been one of those seasons that you can only dream about. The power steering was going out on me thought the race, I was just hanging on the best I could at the end.”
Lang had to battle Colt James for the win once again in the closing laps along with his power steering issues. Just like the epic battle that was staged at Orange County Speedway a few weeks back, this one also had some paint trading going on. James and Lang are both on probation with the ASA Late Model Series, but that didn’t stop them from racing hard in front of the South Georgia crowd. Lang had to charge back from third in the final 10 laps to score the win.
“I got out to about a straightaway lead and Colt James then started to reel me in as the run went on,” explained Lang. “When he got to me, things got a little rough, so I let him past me and let him go for a while, then I started too real him back in. When I got to him I stayed real close and he just missed the entry to one of the corners and he washed up in turn three and I took the lead and held on for the win.”
For Lang, this was his first win with his new crew chief Rich Lushes - who joined the team just two races ago. Perhaps the strange thing about this new combination is that Lang was already winning before acquiring the top notch crew chief. Lushes just adds new life to a team that has already been on a role in 2008.
“Rich (Lushes) is a real good guy and I think the world of him,” said Lang. “We have hit it off pretty good. He knows a lot about the car and radial tires, and I think we can go places together. We work really well together.”
Lang takes a healthy point lead to the next ASA Late Model South event at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida. It will be a record setting win if Lang could park his number 86 Lang Heating and Air Chevy Monte Carlo in victory lane.
